Mapping Our Path to Enhanced Visitor Engagement in Person County

The Person County Tourism Development Authority (PCTDA) has been diligently working to bring the Wayfinding Sign Project to fruition. After years of dedication, we are thrilled to see the finish line approaching. The project was implemented based on goals set by the PCTDA board for the future of tourism in Person County. This initiative aims to enhance the navigation experience for both residents and visitors, promoting local attractions and boosting tourism in Person County.

Collaboration with J.M. Teague Engineering and Planning

Our journey took a significant leap forward with the involvement of J.M. Teague Engineering and Planning, specifically with Transportation Planner, Candace Hladick and Creative Director, John Hornsby of Hornsby Creative. The company is a well known expert in maneuvering complex projects like ours. Their partnership began in September 2023, marking the start of an exciting and productive collaboration. J.M. Teague has played a crucial role in guiding and shaping the project, ensuring that it aligns with our vision and goals.

Stakeholder and Partner Engagement

In January 2024, the TDA organized an initial design meeting, inviting stakeholders and tourism partners to contribute their insights and feedback. The gathering was a resounding success, providing valuable perspectives that helped refine our approach. This collaborative spirit continued into March 2024 when we presented the sign designs at the Tourism Summit, allowing for further input and suggestions from a wider audience of tourism partners.

Progress and Approvals

Since the summit, significant progress has been made. We have revised the sign designs based on the feedback received and printed prototypes for evaluation. A pivotal moment came at the end of December 2024 when the N. C. Department of Transportation approved, as proposed,  the Wayfinding Signs Project. This approval marked a major milestone,  and paved the way for project to move forward.

Recent Developments

Starting in January 2025, the PCTDA reached out again to the City/County governments,  Uptown Development Group,  tourism partners  and property owners to discuss sign placement.  This step was essential in ensuring the signs are strategically located to maximize their impact.

In the Spring of  2025, Signs, Etc. was awarded the bid to fabricate/install Phase I Wayfinding Signs and a  Map Kiosk Sign

During the week of August 4, 2025, in collaboration with J.M. Teague Engineering & Planning, State/City/County and Utility officials, our tourism partners, and property owners- sign site preparation work started.

As of the end of September 2025, with the exception of the Uptown Map Kiosk Sign installation (pending delivery/installation),  Phase I  has been completed.  Efforts are now underway to move forward with Phase 2A.

No property taxes were used to fund this project.
